Questions you should ask your carbon offset provider

2. Do you use an objective standard to ensure the Additionality and quality of the offsets you sell?

Yes we have had to prove this in our submission for Accreditation with the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO)

3. How do you demonstrate that the projects in your portfolio would not have happened without the carbon offsets being sold?

We demonstrate this to the AGO.
For instance no timber is harvested or sold. The forests are being planted specifically to fight the greenhouse effect.

4. Have your offsets been validated against a third party standard by a credible source?

Yes.

All our offsets and projects will fall under our AGO accreditation. Each year an independent verifier assess all our projects and double checks all our procedures and calculations.

5. Do you sell offsets that will actually accrue in the future? If so, how long into the future, and can you explain why you need to “forward sell” the offsets?

We sell both types; Auscarbon Offsets(ACOs) and NGACs/GFACs

- NSW Greenhouse Abatement Certificates NGACs or Greenhouse Friendly Abatement Certificates GFACs can be purchased and retired.

These are carbon credits that have already generated 1 tonne of carbon saving from existing projects around Australia. Purchasing these does not start any new projects. They are more expensive and are fully certified by either the NSW Government or Federal Government.

If you are purchasing to offset your emissions Auscarbon will link these carbon credits to you and crystallize or retire them so that they can never be sold again! However, if you are not offsetting your current emissions but wish to take advantage of the current low prices of carbon and purchase some for later use you can.

Each carbon credit has a serial number much like a bank note. Evidence of this retirement will be visible in your account on our website, a certificate will also be provided listing the quantity and serial numbers of the carbon credits you have bought. Each year this process is examined by an independent verifier and the finding of this report will be published on the website.

Auscarbon Offsets ACO’s, are carbon offsets that will be grown in Auscarbon Forests. Growing forests (bio- sequestration from forest sinks) is extremely expensive. Your purchase is used to start these new projects, to acquire cleared and damaged land that once had a forest and to plant and regrow the forests again.

Auscarbon has guaranteed the Australian Government via the Australian Greenhouse Office that it will maintain and be responsible for all its forests and the carbon they store for a minimum of 100 years!

ACOs will accrue over a 50 year period. I.e. we guarantee that within 50 years our trees and forests will pull the carbon you purchased from the sky. That we will generate the tonnes of carbon you purchased, have this independently verified, converted into Greenhouse Friendly Abatement Certificates and then we will retire them. Proof of this will be provided to you within the 50 year period.

6. Can you demonstrate that your offsets are not sold to multiple buyers?

Yes. Annual independent verifiers inspect our records and books thoroughly. All our offsets are guaranteed! All will convert to GFACs be transferred or linked permanently to you, crystallized and then retired.

7. What are you doing to educate your buyers about global warming and the need for global warming policy?

Our site has a comprehensive list of articles and links to educational websites about ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Reduce or cut down your emissions first and then offset the rest.
