Carbon credits certify the removal of greenhouse gases from the air or the prevention of future greenhouse gas emissions. Each carbon credit is associated with a single tonne of carbon dioxide. There are many different kinds of carbon credits. Forestry carbon credits (Trees) are unique as they are currently the only known way to remove carbon from the atmosphere, and they provide many other benefits for the environment. There are many retailers offering uncertified carbon offsets. Purchasers should avoid carbon offsets that don't come with a certification as they provide no guarantees that you are getting what you are paying for. Auscarbon International currently offers 3 different kinds of certified carbon credits: | Auscarbon Offsets (ACO’s) from planting new forests | Auscarbon Offsets ACO’s, are carbon offsets that will be grown in Auscarbon Forests. Growing forests is extremely expensive. Your purchase is used to start these new projects, to acquire cleared and damaged land that once had old growth forest and to plant and regrow the forests again. | Federal Government Greenhouse Friendly Abatement Certificates (GFAC’s) | | The New South Wales Greenhouse Abatement Certificate (NGAC’s) | NSW Greenhouse Abatement Certificates NGACs or Greenhouse Friendly Abatement Certificates GFACs can also be purchased and retired. These carbon credits come from existing established projects and have already generated 1 tonne of carbon saving. They are more expensive and are fully certified by either the NSW Government or Federal Government but purchasing them will not establish any new projects. |
